Water 2 Save

Water deficits

Learning Center 1

American School of Recife

Essential Question:

Do simple actions impact and reduce the amount of water consumption nowadays especially when we only have access to 1 percent of freshwater?

Impact Statement:

We are impacting American School of Recife’s community by showing them the importance of saving water in face of the environmental problems related to the global warming and water shortage in big cities in Brazil. The strategy we used to save water was to connect a tube between the sink and the toilet so all the water we use to wash our hands will go through this tube and will be used to fill the toilet basin for flushing the toilet. In October 13th we started performing the project. We are monitoring it for about 5 months!

Project Description

Problem -The sink water passes through a tube and goes to the toilet basin. -To flush the toilet, people would need to wash their hands for 2 min and people started to get uncomfortable- If they didn’t wash their hands for 2 min, they would need to leave the sink opened and wait until it fills the whole basin -Some people didn’t like to hear the noise of the sink while using the toilet -Solution -We were out of ideas, so we went to Daniel Santos to ask for advice. -We came up with a more developed idea that the water of the sink would contribute as part of the toilet water -People wouldn’t have to wait for the sink to fill the whole basin anymore, it will fill 16% naturally as you wash your hands. -Next Steps – We want to share our project and spread ideas to spare water using easy methods like: Social Media- Instagram name: @water_2_save Facts about water awareness Answer questions about our project -WATER AWARENESS AT SCHOOL – We plan to do more interactive activities and meet with students once a month -We had a discussion and they said how they do they part in the community by sparing water We presented 5 water facts to elementary students that are common and relatable

Plan For Sustainability

We spare sink water by instead of this water going down the drain, it will be reused to flush the toilet. We spare 200L of water per week and considering that a person who has enough water would be a person with 20L of water in a maximum of 1,000 meters of distance, in 5 days this person would have 100L of water, so with the water we spare per week, we could save 2 people from Africa!

Lesson Plan

1) Our project, Water to Save, is about sparing water. We spare the sink water by connecting a tube from the sink to the toilet basin, and when someone uses the sink, the water that person wasted to wash their hands will pass through the tube and will be reused to flush the toilet. The sink water doesn’t fill the whole basin, but it fills about 16.6%. It may sound like it’s a small amount, but actually, by sparing 16% of the water, we spare 200L of water in only 1 bathroom per week! And since this is our pilot project, we hope to make more bathrooms like ours through the whole school. 2) Our learning goal is to raise awareness to students, parents and people in our community. We want to show the importance of water in our world today by presenting some facts and showing conditions that other people live in. We had the idea of connecting a tube. This tube connects the sink to the toilet basin. The water that we use to wash our hands will be used to flush the toilet. Our first problem was that the water didn’t fill the whole basin, but we figured out a solution. The solution was for the greywater to fill 16.6% of the toilet basin instead of it filling 100%. Right now, we are raising awareness to the kids in elementary school like we said before. We still plan to build more eco bathrooms and raise awareness. 3) https://prezi.com/p/9bcvsz-6ry5f/

Open Source Tech to Reduce E-Waste and Re-purpose

Bridging the Digital Divide

Learning Center 2

Escola Americana de Campinas

Essential Question:

How can e-waste be reduced and still benefit people?

Impact Statement:

In the middle of 2017, the American School of Campinas bought new computers for the use in the school and science labs. The 25 old computers were scheduled to be thrown away, but a team from EAC got together and collected those computers and instead, added an open-source Linux operating system. The computers gained a new life and were outfitted with many educational tools, such as video and photo editors, 3D modeling software, science programs and entry-level programming software. The goal with this project is to find organizations in need of these computers, and donate them according to the institutions’ needs. The focus of donating the computers was to give them to childrens’ organizations that did not have access to new technology. Childrens’ organizations, such as orphanages, need all the help they can get in order to prepare the kids for the real world. With the proper software, those kids can learn anything they want, possibly finding a long lasting hobby or even a future career.

Plan For Sustainability

Our team has made this project sustainable by making an agreement with the EAC administration that all of the old computers would be donated to this project instead of being thrown away, as per the original plan. The next step to grow this project will be to share our successes with the local community with periodic updates of the project. Videos and photos of the computer labs we have created with the institutions will be shared with our community. After establishing three labs, we will ask the community for more donations of old computers, continuing the cycle of the project. We started this project for CAS (Community Action and Service) for Grades 11 and 12 and so we all plan on continuing this project next year and have started to generate project interest from younger students.
