Ash S: GIN GAP Team Bio

I began my work in Global Issues Network (GIN) when I was 12, right before the start of my eighth grade year. I chose to apply for GIN because I thought it would be a good way to make change in my community, but my experience was more transformative that I had ever imagined. I chose to work on gender and sexuality in curriculum and schools (also known as LGBTQ+ issues), particularly at my middle school, Catherine Cook. Through my work, I changed the curriculum and culture of my school and learned many new skills, from proper time management to summarizing my work in a formal tone. Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit before I was able to finish off the year with an “Ally Week,” where many of my plans would be put into action, and students would be taught about LGBTQ+ people in a variety of ways.

Nevertheless, I am still proud of my work this year. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to create an “Ally Week” and I will continue to work to make sure it becomes a tradition. I impacted many students’ experiences, both current and future, at Catherine Cook. I am hoping to finish off my project next year by coming back to my former school, giving a presentation, and providing the materials to make my project sustainable and finish it off as I wish I could have this year. Furthermore, I am hoping to create a GIN club at my new high school, Beacon Academy, and continue to transform the world, one project at a time.
