City of Medellin

About Medellin

Medellin is a city that has advanced a lot in past decades thanks to the work of a growing  professional population including young people. This city has become one of the most innovative destinations in the world  and has even changed its harsh past reputation into a pleasant, developed place to live.

Medellin is one of the most innovative cities from around the world, because it makes constant progress regarding technology, robotics, research, culture, livability and economic progress. A great example of how the city works has made major progress is the SITVA (Public transportation around the city)which won the “Sustainable Transportation Award” due to organized, eco-friendly transportation options such as cable cars, tranvia (trolleys), and the Metro. This city also has social projects such as the “Mercados Campesinos” that works as a market place on the weekends in which local farmers who practice eco-friendly practices in their farms can go and sell their products to a fair price at different locations. These are just some of the social and environmental qualities that Medellin’s community has. The government, educational institutions, and private companies work together to make plans to make the city a more sustainable place to live.

There are some schools in Medellin who have ecological groups who work for the well being of the natural resources, but the only school with an official GIN group is at The Columbus School. This is why at TCS in 2017, made a Local GIN conference called MedeGIN. The mission of the conference was to  influence youth leaders in the community, exchange ideas, and to get to know how GIN works. This conference was smaller and more condensed than an international one, but it brought together youth from public and private institutions to partner around local-global issues.
