Do I have to live in Washington to attend?
No! We encourage students to attend who do not live in the Seattle area, or in Washington. The geographical diversity of attendees is part of what makes the conference so special and globally-aware.
What are the topics of the conference?
We ask students to link the UN Sustainability Goals to their workshop proposals. Issues include poverty, hunger, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, reduced inequalities, and climate action. GIN Conferences, in general, focus on the 20 sustainability goals outlined in the book High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them by Jean Francois Rischard. WAGIN also added a 21st goal: racial justice.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Partnering for the Planet.”
How should students prepare for the conference?
Each team of students will create and present their own workshop about a project they have been working on or plan to work on that addresses one or more of the 17 UN SDGs. The workshop should address their goals, challenges, successes, and plans for the future. As part of their workshop and the film festival, students are asked to create and submit a two minute video related to one or more of the global issues.
What is the film festival?
Students who are leading a workshop will submit a 1-2 minute video related to one or more of the global issues. All films submitted will be shown during the conference. Possible options include: a public service announcement that informs about issues and inspires action, a documentary about action your team has taken towards solving a global problem, a narrative film that tells a story based around solving a social or environmental issue. Or the video can simply be a preview of your workshop.
