How can current smartphone technology be utilized to decrease resource waste in economic exchanges?

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

In this workshop we will identify the resource waste associated with printing receipts. Additionally we will examine how smartphone technology may be used to reduce this waste, provide greater personalized data for the purchaser, and enhanced feedback for the merchant. Using smartphone technology to pay for goods also speeds transactions making more sales possible.

Plan for Sustainability:

The implementation of this solution is examined for use in a school cafeteria. The solution is also scalable to larger merchants in the greater community. Come learn more! The sustainability of this plan centers on proving to the merchant and the purchaser that the upgrade to smartphone technology is mutually beneficial economically as well as environmentally.[/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Student Film”]

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

Read Me More is a service learning project directed to reinforce reading and culture in relation with other activities in a nunnery. With a solid programme that covers basic reading, writing, communication, and even storytelling skills, we ensure a healthy outcome and environment for the girls we work with in the library we built. Entertaining multiple different kinds of hands-on activities in our project Read Me More, we are able to better the lives of over 25 girls (ages 5-11) in the home who are daughters of domestic employees, nannies, other special cases, etc… After almost 2 years of great successes with this project in Panama City, Panama we have learned basic interactive teaching methods, gained multiple sponsors, organised toy drives, donations, become affiliated with national enterprises, and learned how to improve the lives of our girls substantially, all by teaching them the skills we already know in order to make a difference within their lives. Here, we will be able to teach you how we do it, gain sponsors, organise efficient hands-on activities, share our techniques and ideas, how to create a sustainable programme, and all that falls within the lines without feeling stressed out to do so! Teaching is fun, reading as well.

Plan for Sustainability:

Read Me More does not limit itself to entertain solely ISP students and has happily opened their doors for everybody willing to volunteer (although preferably girls.) However to avoid putting all our efforts to waste in what has been the expansion of our programme, to put continuity in the project we invite everyone who would like to volunteer and make a difference in and out of school but will later be passing on leadership roles to a younger crowd as soon as the current project leaders graduate.[/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Student Film”]

#22 – MUN & GIN

American School of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Room 743

Essential Question:

In what ways does MUN at EARJ tackle solutions to GIN issues and reach out to others about them?

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

The Model United Nations program is often regarded as a staple of international schools in South America. By simulating UN conferences with High School students, this activity primarily deals with topics of political and educational interest. While not immediately linked to what GIN often stands for, these two ideals nevertheless shape over half of the GIN issues that need to be solved. Such important topics cannot go unnoticed, and so EARJ MUN has started connecting MUN and what it discusses to the community at large. We do so through such initiatives as a blog of world events as seen through the eyes of our delegates, and a database of past MUN documents for analysis. Together with future projects still in the works, both initiatives are being neatly organized in the website. This workshop will focus both on how MUN relates deeply to GIN, why schools should have an MUN program, how preparation for MUN conferences also teaches analytical skills inherent to a successful GIN project, and also how schools can impact their community through both the knowledge gained by their delegates and other projects their MUN program can undertake.

#23 – EcoClub, We Care

American School of Recife, Brazil

Room 733

Essential Question:

How can students impact the environment with small actions?

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

EcoClub is a group of middle and high school students from the American School of Recife that cares about the environment. The EcoClub members are committed to raising awareness with a global perspective and empowering young people to discover how even the smallest actions can make a huge difference.
Since 2007, the EcoClub has discussed and promoted many different environmental projects. Students and teachers have planted and labeled trees around the school campus, organized beach clean-ups, sponsored pet bottle drives, collected used batteries and old cell phones , transformed used oil into soap, collected and donated used paper to institutions, presented environmental plays, celebrated Earth Day, Arbor Day and Water Day, organized flea markets, sent Eco buddies to different countries around the globe, worked with community service projects, developed a hanging garden to raise organic fruits and vegetables in pet bottles, founded Mission Pawssible, and developed the school’s Atlantic Forest Nursery.
Currently, EcoClub continues to promote Mission Pawssible, which helps abandoned pets living in shelters, to fight against use of plastic in school, to recycle paper, grow herbs in a used tire garden and to promote environmental awareness classes.

Plan for Sustainability:

We are making sure that students are finding alternative solutions within our campus and are encouraging the community to develop an environmental awareness.[/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Student Film”]

#24 – Saving Our Planet

International School of Curaçao, Curaçao

Room 730A

Essential Question:

What solutions can we offer to reduce plastic pollution on a school campus?

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

We are a group of GIN students called the ‘Plastic Police’ from the International School of Curacao. Over the last year we have brainstormed different ways to reduce plastic pollution on our school campus. One thing we realized was that it would be a challenge to reduce the use of disposable plastic bottles completely from our campus and hence we are executing our project one step at a time. We have already completed the first step of our project. We ordered custom made reusable BPA free water bottles with our school and GIN’s logo on them. Students are not compelled to buy and use these bottles only. Our next step will be to purchase wall-mounted water bottle fillers. We would like to start off with one and eventually purchase more. Simultaneously, we would also like to implement the school-wide recycling program in each classroom by keeping recycling bins. The objective is to remind the students and create an ongoing awareness. We will also be working with Green Force, a locally-based recycling group. We believe recycling plays a vital role towards a sustainable future.

Plan for Sustainability:

Recycling is the most important component of sustainability. Pollution is a great threat to all life on our planet and that’s why it is important to take all measures to stop or reduce this pollution. As already explained, the aim of this project is to combat this issue – starting with our community. The reusable bottles we are selling will reduce plastic pollution as they will substitute disposable water bottles. This in turn will decrease the impact of pollution on the environment. These bottles are also BPA free, meaning that the plastic in the bottle will not pose a threat to the user of said bottle. The durability of these GIN bottles and their long-lasting nature also makes them preferable to disposable plastic water bottles. The upper fountain and filtration systems of the water fillers will also reduce water waste as they will better at accommodating water bottles than the water coolers we have now. We also believe that this bettered accommodation of water bottles will incentivize people to bring reusable water bottles to school rather than buying disposable water bottles someplace else. We are confident that this project will not only bring about positive change that will help the state of Curacao’s environment, but will also prove to be feasible for many years to come.[/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Student Film”]

#25 – Food Waste and Hunger

St. Paul’s School, Brazil

Room 745

Essential Question:

How to reduce food waste in a sustainable way?

[su_tabs active=”1″][su_tab title=”Workshop Content”]

Workshop Description:

During our workshop we will introduce to the other delegates the issue of hunger and food waste through both expository objects like videos and slides and through engaging activities like quizzes.
Through a variety of different mediums, we hope to expose the colossal issue of food waste to the delegates. Essentially, we want to share with this large audience the importance of establishing food recycling initiatives, such as ours, in order to combat the issue of careless food waste.
With this in mind, we will present our journey – that is, the research, scaling, building and maintaining of our compost facilities – in order to illustrate clearly how they could bring this simple idea to their own communities. Hence, our project will not end with us: we will extend our hand to the audience and ask them to learn with us, so they themselves can locally combat an eminent problem of today’s society.”

Plan for Sustainability:

Our project for the GIN Latin America 2015 is to build a composter. We are doing this to tackle the issue of food waste and hunger worldwide. We researched the science behind organic composting, visiting a nationally renowned farm, famous for its composting practices. With the knowledge we gained, we have built an organic composter in our school in order to recycle a portion of the food that is wasted in the cafeteria. The humus produced will be utilized to fertilize flower beds in our school. We have also implemented a compost in one of the biggest creches in the São Paulo area, Liga Solidária. Not only does the compost recycle the food and produce humus for their plantations, it also served as an environmental learning area, where they will talk about reducing the effects of food waste and preservation.[/su_tab] [su_tab title=”Student Film”]
